Homemade ginger bug is a natural starter culture used to make fizzy ginger ale, root beer, and other probiotic-rich drinks. Made with grated ginger, sugar, and water, this fermenting agent creates effervescence and adds beneficial bacteria, resulting in delicious and healthful homemade beverages.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup filtered warm water
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh organic ginger
  • 2 teaspoons organic white or unrefined sugar
  • extra ginger and sugar to feed the bug

Instructions

  1. In a sterilized 500 ml mason jar with lid add all the ingredients.
  2. Shake well until all the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Place in a warm spot 72- 80 degrees F) for 24 hours.
  4. the next day feed it by adding another two teaspoons each of the chopped ginger and sugar.
  5. Repeat this step for the next 3-5 days.
  6. It is ready to use when you see bubbles forming.

*do not use chlorine water or softened water as it will kill the fermentation process.
